Welcome to No.36

No.36 is a four-bedroom townhouse that sleeps nine in the heart of medieval Axbridge.

Once an historic coaching inn, the Grade II listed building is no ordinary place to stay; behind the Georgian facade are beautiful bedrooms, an entire ground floor dedicated to dining and merry making, a tiny 1930’s cinema and a fully stocked library.

Axbridge is one of Somerset’s hidden gems; a small town the size of a village that is packed with fascinating history, lovely pubs and a vibrant community. Set in the foothills of the Mendips and looking out to the Somerset levels next to the beautiful cliffs of Cheddar Gorge, yet a mere 2hr 30 from London. We’re also just 30 minutes from Bristol, 20 minutes from Wells and 40 from Bath and Taunton.

No.36

Built before 1800, 36 High Street or The Red Lion was, for most of its history a pub, until forced into closure in the 1990s.

Nowadays a lot goes on at No.36. The three storey main house is a private area for guests to relax in and enjoy. The ground floor has a huge open-plan kitchen, dining and living space which is perfect for those long and lazy holiday breakfasts, dinner parties or cosy evenings around the woodburner.

The bedRooms

Upstairs, four double bedrooms have been renovated and designed with comfort in mind as well as style. Each room is individually decorated, many with your host’s own textiles and wallpaper designs (made in the printmaking studio on the property).

the ground floor

The entire ground floor is given over to entertaining. A well equipped kitchen contains everything you need for a dinner party with plenty of room for everyone around the dining table (which also doubles up as a pool table for after-dinner entertainment), and the comfy sofas are perfect for board games in front of the fire.

the library

A reader’s dream, the library at No.36 is a place of calm - with comfy sofas, floor-to-ceiling shelves stuffed with books both old and new, all looked over by the benevolent Dr Chidgy.

The Cinema

In the old coach house next door, The Roxy is a tiny 32-seat 1920s cinema with original vintage fold down chairs but a 21st century HD projector and Dolby 7.1 surround sound.

Stream movies onto the big screen or watch something from our DVD collection. Or hang out in the 1950s bar at the back mixing cocktails and let the good times roll.
