Axbridge is a picture-perfect Medieval town, with buildings dating from the 1400s, a 17th Century church, and a town square that’s a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

We’ve got two lovely pubs - The Lamb and The Oakhouse, both about two minutes from the front door - a great tea shop in The Alms House, and a lovely antiques-cum-coffee shop in Ripley’s.

On the first Saturday of every month (except January), there’s a really good Farmers Market in the square. Somerset prides itself on producing really good meat, veg, cheese and booze, and you won’t be let down here. There’s also usually some local crafts, a great plant stall and if you’re really lucky, local chef Leonel will be doing some Mexican streetfood.

Axbridge lies on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, an AONB consisting of dramatic limestone cliffs and gorges, caves, woods, heaths and moors. The Mendips are fantastic for lovers of the great outdoors - walkers, nature lovers, road cyclists and mountain bikers are spoilt for choice here.

Heading south from town, you’ll immediately meet the Somerset Levels. They’re flat, they've got endless lanes, drives and culverts, and they’re often a little bit weird. They’re also home to some absolutely incredible nature reserves - RSPB Ham Wall and Shapwick have things to see all year round but are particularly good between October and March when you can see huge Starling Murmurations. well worth the drive, and even better to treat yourself to a night at the nearby Sheppey Inn, one of our favourite pubs for both food and great craft beers.

If you’re in the mood for a city visit, there’s a lot to choose from. Closest is Wells, with its incredible Cathedral and ancient streets. Bristol is only half an hour away, and is filled with culture, food and great shops. Bath is around 40 minutes away, and is well worth a visit for the ancient spas and cotswold stone architecture. Taunton is also only 40 minutes away, with the added bonus of being right next to the Quantock Hills.
